Koh Thalu Thailand, is certainly not one of the country’s best-known beach destinations but just may be one of its best-kept secrets. Whilst Koh Phi Phi, Samui, Koh Lanta, Koh Chang et al are internationally famous – and all have their undoubted attractions and stunning scenery – it’s also great to find a beautiful little island that few others know about.

The spectacular coastline and islands of the Andaman Sea’s Trang and Krabi provinces can get rather buffeted by the western monsoon during the rainy season months, whereas Koh Thalu, situated in a sheltered part of the upper Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, provides a much better chance of clement weather during the May to September period.

The island is tiny, with only one resort on it, and little room for any more, so Koh Thalu’s never going to see any ‘walking streets’ or full moon parties, but it does offer a wealth of activities other than the obvious swimming or just lying on the beach. The resort has sailing dinghies and kayaks available and also organises diving, snorkelling and fishing trips or hikes around the island’s scenic interior, so certainly enough to keep you busy for a few days.

As befits the small island, the ‘resort’ is low-key too, with cosy, individual wooden chalets set on the edge of the beach. Facilities are split between Koh Thalu’s 2 main beaches, with the jetty, restaurant and reception located at Ao Yai (Large Bay), and our accommodation set on the smaller, tranquil Pearl Bay, a 5-minute stroll across the island.
A wonderful place for a few days’ stay. The island of Koh Thalu is located in Bang Saphan District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, and features on our rainy season Thai family tour, Jungles and Islands.
