Pha Taem National Park
A selection of photographs of our recent trek through the picturesque but remote Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani Province of far northeastern Thailand. We have already blogged about Pha Taem in some detail so what follows is mostly a collection of photos from our last Thailand, Laos and Cambodia Emerald Triangle tour. We joined up with a bunch of monks from Uttaradit Province who were good company, as well as adding some welcome colour to our park photos.

Being the rainy season, July’s a good time to visit the park since everywhere is lush; fauna abounds, flowers are in bloom and the rocks are covered with myriad ferns and mosses. (Plus, of course, there are very few other people there!)
At some 340 square kilometres, Pha Taem is one of Thailand’s smaller national parks, so you’re not going to come across any of the larger mammals, although bird-life, insects and butterflies and reptiles abound, especially at that time of year.

A great hike and despite it being officially the monsoon period, the weather remained clement throughout. Our Pha Taem National Park visit was followed by a return boat trip down the Mekong River itself to Kong Jiam Town for our overnight accommodation. Full details of our Emerald Triangle itinerary, plus all our Thai tours and Laos options, can be found at our Thailand and Laos destination pages.

Note also that a visit to Pha Taem National Park is also included in our new Thailand World Heritage tour which takes you overland from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani via the contrasting World Heritage Sites of Ayutthaya and Khao Yai National Park as well as Phanom Rung – a spectacular Angkor-period temple perched atop an extinct volcano.
