Lampang – Lanna culture
Visit the fascinating, historical and rarely visited North Thai town of Lampang
2-day Lampang tour
Lampang – a town not usually on visitors’ itineraries for North Thailand although we reckon it should be and indeed, all the more reason for visiting! One of the oldest settlements in the region, dating back over 1,500 years to the Mon, Dvaravati, period this laid back town, a short ride south of Chiang Mai and surrounded by forested hills is considered the centre of the old Lanna culture and possesses some of the most spectacular temples of northern Thailand.
More recently Lampang was one of the major centres of the teak trade and fortuitously many of the 19th-century ‘gingerbread-style’ merchant’s houses, offices and teak barons’ mansions can still be seen in and around town including the famous Luis House, constructed by Luis Leonowens, the son of the famous Anna of King and I fame.
Our 2-day excursion from Chiang Mai takes in the picturesque Lanna temples and a visit to the old town of Lampang by traditional pony and trap as well as of course as its street-life and local markets. Outside of town visits include the province’s famous Elephant Conservation Centre and Elephant Hospital.
An unusual, varied and rewarding side trip which would fit perfectly into any of our Thai tours starting or finishing in Chiang Mai.
Here's an idea of what you can expect to do and see day-to-day.
