Extend your tour with a stay on a delightful tropical island

Scenic Koh Chang; a large island lying on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand with an unspoilt, mountainous, jungle-clad interior and a series of picturesque sandy bays down its west coast is another of our recommendations for some quality island and beach time after finishing your tour.

Koh Chang has what we’d describe as a medium level of tourist development meaning if you’re after a castaway/honeymoon type island you may be better looking at Koh Mak or Koh Libong but it still avoids the mass tourism of busier islands and means that, with a wide choice of resorts, restaurants, cafes and activities it’s a great option for families for instance or for rainy season island stays.

There’s plenty to do on the island apart from the beach and pool including hiking in the jungle interior, treks to waterfalls, visits to elephant camps, boat trips through the national marine park, snorkelling and scuba diving, sea-kayaking, massage and spa treatments or even Thai cookery lessons! Without being overdeveloped Kai Bae also offers a  good choice of restaurants and cafes aside from the resort’s evening beach barbeque.

Koh Chang is around a 45-minute ferry ride from the pier at Ao Thamassart which in turn is served by Trat Airport with several daily departures for the 45-minute flight to Bangkok, The island then is a suitable extension for any tour ending in Bangkok whilst it is also easily reached from the Cambodian town of Battambang via the border at Pailin. A fine way to finish a Cambodia tour after the temples of Angkor. (Approx. 1 and 1/2 hours driving time from Battambang to the border followed by a 2-hour drive to the boat pier.)
