Kompong Chhnang, Cambodia

Kompong Chhnang, some photos taken on the All Points East, Cambodia Overland tour from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and Battambang

Kompong Chhnang, Cambodia, a provincial capital lying on the bank of the Tonle Sap River some 2 hours north of Phnom Penh and without a doubt one of Cambodia’s most interesting and photogenic regional towns. (Yes we’ve already posted a couple of articles about Kompong Chnang but we reckon it’s so good a few more photos won’t hurt!)

For much of the year, the town is surrounded on three sides by water as the Tonle Sap merges and flows into Kompong Chhnang’s suburbs meaning that many of the town’s buildings are either constructed on floating rafts or very high wooden stilts.

There’s also a great riverside market Phsa Krom – where local fruits and vegetables, produce from downstream as far as Vietnam and of course, lots of fish are unloaded. Boats of all shape and sizes fill the river, riverbank and suburban ‘streets’ making for, as we said, one of Cambodia’s most distinctive, fascinating and picturesque provincial towns.

A stop-off at Kompong Chhnang, which lies conveniently just off the highway between Battambang and Phnom Penh, for lunch and a wander around the market area is included in our Cambodia Overland tour as well as our Cambodia and Vietnam photography special Images of Indochina itinerary.
