About Us

We are travel nerds who fell in love with Southeast Asia, simple as that!

All Points East

About All Points East: Our aim is to combine the best of both worlds with ‘Western’ organizational and logistical skills associated with the in-depth local knowledge and expertise of our locally employed staff.

We’re also very proud, and reckon it’s a good sign, that many of our staff, both full-time and freelance have been with us for many years so are all well versed in the signature All Points East style as well as being highly experienced. Our tours hope to show you the ‘must-see’ sites and some of the lesser-known ones but importantly doing this in a relaxed, flexible and fun way. We won’t forget you’re on holiday and guides’ social skills are at least as important as knowing exactly which year that temple was built in!

Starting out

We set up All Points East (then operating as Gecko Travel) in late 1999 with offices in both the UK and Thailand and ran our first Thai tours in early 2000. Even 20 years ago Southeast Asia was a different place with just fledgeling WiFi, few mobile phones and a far more basic transport infrastructure plus of course a far more limited choice of hotels and eateries. When we added Laos and Cambodia to our destinations in 2001 the countries barely had sealed roads (none at all in the latter case), only patchy electricity and almost zero WiFi. Even places like Siem Reap or Luang Prabang were still relatively off the beaten track back then!

Today

20 years later we’re still going (we like to think) strong and while we’re not going to be buying a company jet any time soon (never the intention), the passion’s not diminished. We’re proud of our 2 decades of running successful tours (yes there’s been the occasional hiccup – it’s the nature of the business) and admittedly smug at managing to remain genuinely independent, with genuinely small group sizes and not compromising on our mixture of off the beaten track and well-known sites recipe.

Our Team

A few of the faces that make it all happen...

GM - Southeast Asia

Mark Ord

Mark has over 25 years experience in Southeast Asia, including several as researcher for guidebooks before establishing APE in 1999 as a result of a bet with a mate in a South London pub

GM - United Kingdom

Lesley Schofield

Anyone making enquiries or booking a tour will have come across Lesley in our UK office. Her lack of opportunity to travel is made up for by time spent walking her dogs in the jungles of Hampshire

Manager - Thailand

Wipaporn Ord

Wipaporn, or Wi, is a 2016 Silver medallist in the World Guide of the Year Awards. Originating from Bangkok, she runs the Southeast Asia office. Being a mum herself Wi’s speciality is family tours

Manager - French dept.

Pascal 'Kan'

Pascal, hailing from Angers, France, has called Thailand his home for over 25 years and his wealth of local knowledge and love of the region are both invaluable on our Thai and Lao tours

Ground Crew

Organizing tours and travel in such a widespread area as Southeast Asia entails a fair amount of staff; admin, tour-leaders, guides, drivers etc so below is just a selection of our co-workers with the main criteria being merely whoever we happened to have a photo of to hand.

Our crew on the ground includes nuclear scientist turned guide Dalat in Saigon; Aor and Oh in Bangkok; Nak, Chet, Veng, Rani and all our wonderful ground staff in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap; Pong in northern Laos plus of course Sone in southern Laos, Merry and Tony in China, Hadji, Yap and all the Malaysia team, our awesome Borneo guides Alex and Henry and Patrick (Po Po), Win Win, Nae Mo, Hla Maung, (who also kindly provided some of his excellent photos for our new site), in Burma, (Myanmar). Many thanks also to the tireless Phyu Phyu in Yangon, Laos’s one and only Crewe Alexandra supporter, Rob in Vientiane, Jeremy in Kota Kinabalu and Rene in Hanoi for all their help and organizational skills that ensure the smooth running, (well most of the time!) of our range of Southeast Asian tours and holidays.
